What ready-to-wear means
Ready-to-wear (also called off-the-rack or ready-made) suits are produced in a standard size run. You try the size that fits you, and any small adjustments, such as trouser length, are handled by a local tailor. This is different from made-to-measure, which adjusts a pattern to your measurements over several weeks, and bespoke, which is built from scratch.
Why ready-to-wear works well in Singapore
Formal occasions in Singapore often come up at short notice: a wedding invitation, an interview, a company dinner. Ready-to-wear lets you try, choose and take home a suit in a single visit. For most body types, a ready-to-wear suit tried across a few brands looks just as sharp as a more expensive alternative.
How to judge a ready-to-wear suit
Check the shoulders first, then the chest, sleeves and trouser length. Test the fit sitting, reaching and walking. Ask what is included in the price and what happens if the fit is not quite right.
Ready-to-wear, made-to-measure and bespoke compared
The three routes differ in time, fit and process.
| Ready-to-wear | Made-to-measure | Bespoke | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How it's made | Standard sizes | Base pattern adjusted to you | Pattern cut for you |
| Wait | Same day | Several weeks | Several weeks, multiple fittings |
| Fit | Close for most builds | Closer | Closest |
| Try before you buy | Yes, the actual suit | Fitting of a pattern first | Fittings during the process |
| Best for | Most men, urgent events | Unusual builds | Specific details and fit |
Our guide to made-to-measure versus ready-to-wear explains each in more depth.
How to judge a ready-to-wear suit's quality
Quality shows in details you can check in the fitting room.
| Check | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Fabric | A breathable feel and a readable content label |
| Stitching | Even, tight stitches with no loose threads |
| Buttons | Secure, with spares if possible |
| Lining | Smooth and without puckering |
| Shoulders | Sit at the edge of your shoulder |
| Movement | Comfortable when you sit, reach and walk |
Alterations on a ready-to-wear suit
Most ready-to-wear suits need only minor alterations such as a trouser hem or shortening the sleeves. Shoulders are structural, so they should fit off the rack. Suit Archive does not alter in-house, but a local tailor can handle small adjustments and we can recommend one. See our alterations guide for what can and cannot be changed.
Who ready-to-wear is best for
Ready-to-wear suits are best for anyone who needs a suit quickly, wants to see the actual garment before buying, or wants a clear fixed price. They also suit groups, such as groomsmen and corporate teams, because everyone can be fitted in one visit.
Ready-to-wear terms explained
Several phrases mean the same thing.
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Ready-to-wear (RTW) | Made in standard sizes and sold immediately |
| Off the rack | Taken from the rack and tried on in standard sizes |
| Ready-made | The same idea; common in everyday speech in Singapore |
| Made-to-measure | A base pattern adjusted to you; takes weeks |
| Bespoke | A pattern cut for you from scratch; takes weeks |
Common myths about ready-to-wear suits
Three myths we hear often.
- -Myth: ready-to-wear never fits properly. Reality: tried across brands, most men find a good fit, and small fixes are easy.
- -Myth: you must pay a lot for a good suit. Reality: quality depends on fabric, construction and fit; check all three.
- -Myth: ready-to-wear looks off the rack. Reality: with the right fit and styling, it looks sharp and tailored.
Ready-to-wear for groups and teams
Because ready-to-wear has no production wait, it is ideal for groups: groomsmen, corporate teams, student committees and delegations can all be fitted in one visit and take their suits home. A group of five complete suits is $890 at $178 each.
